According to Energy Star, EPA estimates that homeowners can save an average of 15% on heating and cooling costs (or an average of 11% on total energy costs) by air sealing their homes and adding insulation in attics, floors over crawl spaces, and accessible basement rim joists. By sealing air leaks and adding insulation, your home will use less energy and lower your utility bills. Insulation and air sealing not only lowers your energy costs, but also increases the overall comfort of a home.

Energy efficient windows and doors can also help lower energy costs. In addition, properly weatherstripping and caulking helps reduce air leaks around windows and doors. Energy efficient windows are rated on their overall performance. When looking for more efficient windows, it is important to understand the window and door performance ratings. U-Factor is the rate that a window or door conducts non-solar heat flow. The lower this number, the more energy efficient it is. Solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) is the fraction of solar radiation that is transmitted through the window or door. Once transmitted through, it is absorbed as heat inside the house. The lower the SHGC, the more shading ability the window or door has. A product with a higher SHGC is beneficial in the winter for solar heating. The last factor that affects the performance rating is the air leakage – the rate of air movement around a window or door. A product with lower air leakage is more energy efficient. For energy efficient walls, you can dense pack them with insulation.
