Green Solutions

Snap Construction can help make your home more green! Through insulation, air sealing, energy efficient windows and doors, renewable roofing, and more – you can count on Snap Construction.

Upgrading your insulation and air sealing the attic space will help make your home more energy efficient. According to Energy Star, EPA estimates that homeowners can save an average of 15% on heating and cooling costs (or an average of 11% on total energy costs) by air sealing their homes and adding insulation in attics, floors over crawl spaces, and accessible basement rim joists. By sealing air leaks and adding insulation, your home will use less energy and lower your utility bills. Insulation and air sealing not only lowers your energy costs, but also increases the overall comfort of a home.

Energy efficient windows and doors can also help lower energy costs. In addition, properly weatherstripping and caulking helps reduce air leaks around windows and doors. Energy efficient windows are rated on their overall performance. When looking for more efficient windows, it is important to understand the window and door performance ratings. U-Factor is the rate that a window or door conducts non-solar heat flow. The lower this number, the more energy efficient it is. Solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) is the fraction of solar radiation that is transmitted through the window or door. Once transmitted through, it is absorbed as heat inside the house. The lower the SHGC, the more shading ability the window or door has. A product with a higher SHGC is beneficial in the winter for solar heating. The last factor that affects the performance rating is the air leakage – the rate of air movement around a window or door. A product with lower air leakage is more energy efficient. For energy efficient walls, you can dense pack them with insulation.

Renewable roofing is a sustainable solution to traditional roofing methods. Asphalt shingle recycling is becoming more and more popular and produces far less waste than throwing old shingles in a landfill. Owens Corning roofing materials are used from recycled shingles. “At Owens Corning, we are constantly seeking solutions that carry economic, environmental and social benefits. The shingle recycling program is the perfect example of carefully considered product life-cycle management, from conception of design and manufacture to durable service and end-of-life recycling,” said Owens Corning Chief Sustainability Officer, Frank O’Brien-Bernini. “As part of Owens Corning’s commitment to safeguarding, sustaining and improving the environment for the benefit of current and future generations, we are proud to be the first roofing manufacturer that helped create an infrastructure to increase shingle recycling and material reuse across the country.”
