Now that spring is here, it’s a great time of year to schedule a remodeling or home improvement project. Whether you’re a first-time homeowner or have lived in the same home in the Twin Cities for years, learn about how to schedule your next remodel project to help avoid any unwanted headaches or stress.
There is no set right or wrong way of scheduling a remodeling project on your home. We’ve had people call us asking questions about a deck on a Monday only to be enjoying a barbecue on their new patio a few weeks later. We have also had customers that started the planning phase a year before they want the work completed. If you are thinking about renovating, here is a basic timeline of what you need to know.
Step #1 Get an Initial Idea of What You Want
Are you remodeling for Minneapolis energy efficiency or improved quality of living? Does the whole family agree that a basement remodel would give them more convenience than turning the attic into a loft? Are you budgeting for the interior or the exterior? Are you adding on to your home or doing demo and renovating an existing room? How much do you want to spend?
There are numerous questions to ask yourself and your family when it comes to determining the type of project you are going to contract. You don’t need to get into the specific details yet, but it’s important to know the basics of the type of renovation you want during this stage.
Step #2 Schedule a Consultation
Once you’ve got a firm idea of what, where, and how you want to remodel your home, you can take the next step of consulting with a design contractor. A field rep will visit your home and break down the feasibility and work required to complete your project. Maybe we’ll come up with the exact project specs together, maybe we’ll fine tune some things, or maybe we’ll all go back to the drawing board when feasibility and costs are broken down. Either way, you’ll feel confident in proceeding to the next step.
Step #3 Planning
The planning phase of your construction work is often going to be the most arduous process because it is all the work done before breaking ground. You will finalize blueprints, sign contracts, secure funding, permits, materials, subcontractors (plumbers, electricians, etc.) and then the work will begin.
Step #4 Demolition / Construction / Finishing
This stage is when the work begins. Some things might also arise during the building process which is why it is important to be flexible with your deadlines. All your work will be rewarded when you can enjoy a new home feature now, and one that will make your home more valuable down the line.
