As Labor Day weekend approaches, Minnesota residents know all too well that it won’t be long before the cold weather slowly creeps into our everyday lives. Luckily there’s still plenty of time before that happens, but keep the seasons in mind if you are planning home improvement projects.
Speaking of those projects, now is the time to tackle those home improvement projects – especially if you’ve considered them for a while. Here are a few tips that we recommend so that even if you do not break ground on remodeling this year, you will have a plan for when you are ready.
Create a Plan For Your Outdoor Space
Utilize your outdoor space to it’s maximum potential! This can mean cleaning up the yard to enjoy a sitting space, adding flowers or shrubs, and more. If you have a patch of yard that could be better utilized now is the time to start budgeting so that the work can commence first thing next spring. Some ideas include a deck, a backyard BBQ, stone courtyards or fountain areas, etc. If you are just planning, visualize your outdoor area even before it’s there. Is the spot too hot? Do you need to create some shade before next year, etc.?
Any Time Is Right For a Window Upgrade
There’s still plenty of hot days left in the summer season and we all know September days can still be warm. There’s still time to recoup some investment from lowered utility bills if you decide to install new energy efficient windows. More importantly, you’ll have the new units in place in time for the frigid winter season which offers an especially high return on investment for Minnesota residents.
“Summer Only” Home Improvement Projects
There are certain renovations around the house that aren’t necessarily mandatory to do in the summer compared to the winter, but you may have better results if you do. An example of this is having new shingles installed on your roof as the asphalt creates the tight seal it needs at an ambient temperature. Along those same lines, if your driveway needs repaving you’ll get a better adhering in the summer. Warm months are also the time to re-stain your deck or do any painting that you have planned.
The Inevitable…Winter Prep
We never want to force winter unless you’re a cross country skiing or outdoor hockey enthusiast, but it’s important not to procrastinate on Mother Nature either. Consider upgrading your insulation before the temperatures drop below freezing.
