Are There Different Styles of Decks?
As the Minnesota summer continues, you’ve probably thought how great it would be to be enjoying this beautiful weather out on your new deck. Believe it or not, building a deck is not as extensive a project as most homeowners think and many times it takes just as long for the cement in the footings to cure as it does to have the deck up and ready for a grill-out. One question that a lot of our customers have is ‘what kind of deck can I have built?’ – meaning are there different styles available? There are different styles of decks – and here are some options:
Different types of decks :
Platform decks
In ranch style homes or with residential decks otherwise located on the first story of a building, the platform style is typically used. Platform decks often have just one or two steps and many times don’t even require a railing because they’re only a couple of feet off the ground. Platform decks can also be on the back of the house.
Raised decks
If you want to install a deck from a second-story room, the type of deck structure that is built is called a raised deck. These types of fixtures do require an enclosed railing per Minnesota State Building Code. Some of the weight of a raised deck is supported by attaching it to the home. A majority of the weight rests on multiple foundation posts. The area underneath the deck can be used for storage or an additional recreation spot. It can also be blocked off from view by using lattice as a skirting.
Wraparound decks
Wraparound decks are very convenient to connect two different areas of your home. This type of Minneapolis roofing contractor encompasses two (or more) sides of the house which is perfect if you want to walk out of your kitchen on the side and carry food to the lounging spot of your deck on the rear of your home. Wraparound decks especially improve the curb appeal of your home and make the property look larger overall.
Detached or freestanding decks
When you want to expand your livable space out into your yard but away from your actual home, a detached deck is a great idea. These can be surrounded by a garden or covered by a pergola but either way, they provide a very comforting area that can be used for either relaxing or entertaining. Many homeowners create a stone walkway to these types of decks and it really boosts the overall aesthetics of their property when completed.
Don’t underestimate how much you would enjoy any of these types of decks all year long for seasons to come.
